The sky above the ridge did not darken; it dissolved. It began as a curdling of the ozone, the thin blue turning the shade of bruised plums before rotting into absolute pitch. Down in the hollow, the warning sirens gave three strangled bleats before the cold snapped their electrical conduits in twain.
Vael pulled his thermic cowl tight over the bridge of his nose, the coarse weave already stiffening with frost from his own breath. "The barometer dropped twenty millibars in four minutes," he called down the trench, his voice swallowed instantly by the rising whine of the wind. "This isn't an inversion front. It’s the Shift."
Beside him, Kora adjusted the frequency gauge on her lance. The amber vacuum tube sputtered, casting trembling rings of luminescence across the sheer granite face. Five miles up the peak, where the Darrian spires sliced through the lower cloud deck, an unnatural sound rolled down upon them. It was neither thunder nor avalanche. It was the subterranean grinding of ancient alloy—doors sealed sixty generations ago, unsealing in the dark.
"We cannot hold the perimeter," she said, her amber visor reflecting the twin moons eclipsed by rolling squall clouds. "Noah told us the archives spoke of this. If the Darrian rift breaches, the mountain won't just fall—it will consume everything down to the coast."
